Street names in Budapest have often changed depending on the current political regimes.
Maps always had to be reprinted and people had to learn the new names.
When a street name changes, the old street name plate must (by law) remain for at least two years, crossed out in red.
If a street is named after a person, at least 5 years must have passed since that person's death. The street name cannot be changed for 15 years.
This is why today's generation of 60-70 year olds still meet in "Moscow Square" (now Széll Kálmán Square) or remember "Liberation Square" or "Red Army Road".
